- About Us
We are NAFAH.
North America Food Alliance Halal exists to make halal status verifiable: written standards, independent audits, a certification decision separated from the audit, and certificates that can be checked.
Halal assurance for North American manufacturing
NAFAH is an independent halal certification body serving manufacturers, processors, co-packers and food service operators across the United States and Canada.
We were formed by food technologists and Islamic scholars who kept meeting the same problem from two directions. Manufacturers were being asked for halal certification without being told what it actually required. Consumers and importers were being shown certificates they had no way to check. Both problems come from the same gap: halal assurance that is asserted rather than documented.
Our answer is procedural rather than promotional. We publish the standard we certify against. We send an auditor who signs their report. We keep the certification decision away from the person who performed the audit. And we record the outcome, including suspensions and withdrawals, against the certificate itself.
Three things we will not trade away
Integrity
A requirement exists only if it is written down before it is applied, and a decision is made only by people who did not perform the audit.
Openness
Scopes, dates and statuses are stated on every certificate. We would rather a buyer find a suspension from us than find out from a recall.
Service
We answer the phone, we explain findings before we write them, and we tell you what to ask your supplier for, with a template to send them.
Three lines of work

Talk to usHow a NAFAH decision is made
Three groups are involved in every certificate, and they are deliberately kept apart.
The Shariah Advisory Board issues rulings on ingredient classes, slaughter practice and processing questions. It does not review individual clients.
The Technical Review Team applies those rulings to formulations, processing aids and sanitation chemicals, and prepares the audit plan.
The Certification Committee reviews the audit report and makes the grant, suspend or withdraw decision. Auditors do not vote on their own files.
Board and committee members, along with their declared interests, are listed in our impartiality statement, issued with the application pack.
